One good example is the chestnut, which grows on trees at altitudes between 200 and 1000 metres. In the past, people used to call the chestnut tree the "tree of bread", because it provided food that could be eaten for at least six months of the year. Today, many foodstuffs are still derived from chestnuts (flour, bread, cake, marmalade, beer and honey), and there are many recipes incorporating chestnuts, such as "marrons glacés" and trimmings to go with game.
This is a sector in which many producers and breeders are still active today.
