Huts & Refuges

As recently as twenty years ago, these buildings were still used on cool summer nights to shelter herdsmen and their animals. Today, these refuges, which are easy to reach, thanks to the extensive network of paths up from the valley floor, provide overnight shelter in stupendous, still-intact locations.
It is the silence, the wind, the colours and the odours that will linger with us as when we make our way down from the mountain again. And we might perhaps even take some alpine cheese with us too.

Refuge opening times

From the beginning of June to the end of October: Key in the door / Door always open

Access to the refuges

The paths up from the valley floor are clearly marked in red-and-white.

Links between the refuges

Since 1994, all the refuges (except Osola) have been interlinked by means of an alpine path with blue-and-white markings. This path follows the ridge between the Verzasca and Leventina valleys.

Rules for using the refuges

The refuges are available for you to use them. The first person to arrive on any given day does not become the owner of the refuge, but the welcoming host for the next visitors to arrive. Hospitality and generosity are traditional characteristics of mountain dwellers. Remember to take enough food up the mountain with you; you will only find beverages in the refuges.
